New Addition to the Birmingham Community Care Observation Kit Bags!
The Trolley Bag
The Trolley Bag is designed to help users transport essential equipment efficiently to and from patients’ homes, while also reducing the risk of injury. Built from a lightweight yet rigid frame, it offers strength and durability without compromising on portability.
For ease of handling, the Trolley Bag features both a side grab handle to encourage two-handed lifting and an extendable metal handle for smooth manoeuvrability when on the move. Inside, a shelf divides the main compartment, and the bag includes two clear-topped pouches to help keep contents organised and easily identifiable.
This product is made to order, meaning the internal configuration and pouches can be tailored to meet your team’s specific needs. It is available in a variety of colours from our signature micrAgard™ range—a wipe-clean, infection-control compliant material.
The Trolley Bag is designed to work seamlessly with the Observation Bag and Scales Bag, helping to lighten the workload and reduce lifting strain for healthcare workers. All three products are fully compatible and can be used together or individually based on the user’s requirements.
Background: Birmingham Community Healthcare
Birmingham Community Healthcare identified a growing number of musculoskeletal injuries among staff, primarily nurses carrying heavy or ill-suited equipment bags during community visits. A review highlighted a lack of consistency in the bags used—varying shapes, sizes, and materials—which not only increased injury risk but also posed infection control concerns.
Following an audit of the equipment typically carried, it became clear that larger bags encouraged overpacking, leading to unnecessary weight and further risk.
In collaboration with Openhouse, Birmingham Community Healthcare co-developed a modular bag system designed around real staff needs. The result was a more efficient, customisable solution that:
-
Minimises the need to carry all equipment at once
-
Allows for separation of equipment between the Trolley, Observation, and Scales Bags
-
Reduces the overall weight of carried items
-
Improves infection control compliance through the use of micrAgard™ material
-
Promotes consistency across the trust, aiding training and standardisation
Staff across various teams have since reported a strong preference for the new bags, highlighting improvements in comfort, safety, and ease of use.
